Fast Shutter Mode for Motion Capture with Casio Exilim Camera

A digital camera can be a useful tool for capturing and analyzing motion, but sometimes specific settings are necessary for the best results.

The Casio Exilim cameras we use for motion capture can take video at many different frame rates (i.e. number of frames per second) and shutter speeds (i.e. amount of time the shutter is open). Thirty frames per second – the standard for most video formats – is sufficient to capture most types of motion. However, a higher frame speed is sometimes helpful to avoid blurring of quickly moving objects.

To set the video framerate/shutter speed, press the “SET” button and scroll to the “Movie Quality” option. The “30-240” option works best for most situations. This sets the camera to a frame rate of 30 frames per second and a shutter speed of 4.167 ms (1/240th of a second).
